A jar of Bale Oud Timber body butter on a walnut table beside a wool blanket and a mug

Best cologne for fall and how to wear it

The best cologne for fall is a warm one: woods, amber, a bit of spice. From our six, Oud Timber and Rogue 540 are the warm picks, and Avant or Bleu Hour suit the crisp, dry days when you want something lighter.

Which warm scents lead the list?

Sweaters, early evenings and dark rooms suit woody, amber-heavy scents. The light, bright ones that felt right in July start to feel thin. One catch: the warm scents are also the loud ones in our range, so the first fall mistake is using too much.

Oud Timber is our take on the profile of Tom Ford Oud Wood, built around oud, sandalwood and vanilla. It is warm, deep and woody. Ours is a different formula in a butter base, so it is similar in profile, not identical. It is an evening scent: dinner, a cold walk home, a dark jacket.

Rogue 540 is our take on the profile of Baccarat Rouge 540 from Maison Francis Kurkdjian, built around saffron, amber and cedar. It is warm and sweet. Rogue 540 is the one I wear to dinner. It is a poor fit for a quiet desk or a crowded elevator.

What if you want something lighter in fall?

Not every fall day is a candlelit one. For crisp, dry days, two of our scents work better.

Avant is our take on the profile of Creed Aventus, which launched in 2010. It is built around pineapple, birch and musk: fruit and birch, which suits a clear October morning.

Bleu Hour is our take on the profile of Bleu de Chanel. Citrus, incense and woods make it fresh, without the weight of the warm two, which makes it an easy weekday scent.

Bale is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tom Ford, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Creed or Chanel. Ours are our own formulas.

How should you wear a warm scent?

  • Apply it once you are out of the shower and still slightly damp, which is when our jars wear longest.
  • Use less of Oud Timber and Rogue 540 than you would of a lighter scent. A butter works up close, so people who stand near you will find it. You do not need to fill the room.
  • Aim for your neck, upper chest and forearms. Under a sweater and a coat, the places where your collar opens are the ones that count.
  • In a small, warm room, use less of the loud two, or wear Avant or Bleu Hour.
  • For a long evening, a small top-up on the back of your neck beats a second full dose. The free travel tin that comes with 2 jars is easier to carry than a jar.
  • If you own a spray in the same scent family, try one spray over the butter and see how it wears.

Which one should you pick?

Pick by where you will be, not by which sounds best on a list.

  • Dinners and evenings: Rogue 540 or Oud Timber. This is what the loud ones are for.
  • The office or a weekday: Bleu Hour.
  • Weekends and clear, cold days: Avant.
  • No idea yet: the scent quiz asks a few questions and points you at one.

For one warm and one lighter, two jars is $59 with a free travel tin. Every order has a 30-day money-back guarantee, claimed by replying to your order email.
