A gift you get to enjoy up close

Pick the scent that matches what he already wears, and if you do not know, the Discovery Set at $19 or the scent quiz removes the guess. Bale is a pheromone-infused body butter, $25 a jar, handmade in small batches, and every order arrives wrapped in a piece of a real coffee sack.

Which scent for which man?

Start with what he wears now. If it is fresh and citrusy, pick Bleu Hour or Savanna. If it is warm and sweet, pick Oud Timber or Rogue 540. These are our opinions from the notes and the occasions, not rules.

• Rogue 540: saffron, amber, cedar. For the man who dresses up for dinner. In our view it is one of the louder two of our six.
• Avant: pineapple, birch, musk. Fruit-led, for daytime and early evening.
• Bleu Hour: citrus, incense, woods. The easy all-rounder.
• Oud Timber: oud, sandalwood, vanilla. Warm and deep, best in cooler months. The other louder one.
• Reverie: bergamot, ginger, black tea. Light and a little warm, good for daytime.
• Savanna: bergamot, pepper, ambroxan. Fresh and clean, with a bit of spice.

Gifts for a partner

You know what he smells like already. If he wears a Bleu de Chanel or Dior Sauvage type of scent, stay in that family. If he leans warm, Oud Timber suits winter and Rogue 540 suits a night out.

Gifts for an adult son

For a son who is starting with fragrance, we would go with something easy to wear. A butter also stays close to the skin and does not fill a room, which suits a first scent.

Gifts for a father

For a father, start with what he already wears. If it is a deeper, woodier scent, Oud Timber is the next step. If he prefers something lighter, Reverie has ginger and black tea.
