How many sprays of cologne is too many?

There is no number of sprays that is right for every cologne. You have too many when you added the last one because you could no longer smell it. Start with one, wait, and ask someone near you whether they can smell it before you add another.

How do you know when it is too many?

The scent, the version and your skin all change the answer, so a number from a blog is only a guess. Two signs work better than a count.

  • You added a spray because you stopped smelling it. That is the most reliable sign. Your nose got used to the scent, and it has not faded.
  • People notice it before they are close to you, or it is still in the room after you leave. A scent you wear to work should reach the person next to you, not the person across the room.

People disagree about how strong is too strong, which is why the test is another person, not a number.

Why do we overspray?

Because of nose blindness. After a few minutes your nose tunes out a scent that stays the same, so it feels as if you are wearing nothing. You spray again, and everyone else is now smelling a lot of cologne while you still smell none.

Our piece on nose blindness and cologne covers how to run the check. In short: ask a friend, a partner or a coworker you trust, and do not tell them where you sprayed. If they have to lean in, you are fine. If they notice it from a step away, you have enough.

Two details make it easier to get right. Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and parfum are different formulas, so check which one you have, because the amount that works for one does not carry over to another. And go lighter with scents that carry further, usually the warm and sweet ones. Where you spray matters as much as how many, and our placement guide covers that.

Does a quieter format help?

It can. A scented body butter works up close and sits on your skin, so someone has to be near you to catch it. That makes overdoing it harder, and it is a good fit when your worry is that cologne comes across as too strong.

A butter does not replace a spray if you want a scent that carries across a room, and we do not say it does. It is a different tool, and for a desk or a table for two it is often the better one.

If you wear both, use one spray over the butter and judge it by someone else's nose.

You can see all six scents on the scents page. If you are not sure which suits a quieter routine, the scent quiz will narrow it down.

Quick answers

How many sprays of cologne should I wear? Start with one. Wait a few minutes, then ask someone near you. Add one more only if they say they can barely smell it.

Is four sprays too many? It can be, but the count is not the test. If the last one was added because you could not smell it, it was too many.

Can too much cologne bother other people? Yes, especially in close quarters like an office, a car or a small restaurant. A scent that works across a room outdoors can feel heavy at a desk.

Why can I not smell my cologne after an hour? Your nose has got used to it. That does not mean it has faded, so ask someone before you spray again.

What if I like a strong scent? Wear it, and check with someone else, because you are the person least able to tell.
